Frigoboat Freezer Systems

A freezer on board is a great convenience and can really enhance the selection and quality of food on board.

A well designed freezer can store a freshly caught fish or lobster for weeks.

A freezer can also consume a lot of energy so careful planning and design will really pay off.

In general a freezer compartment should be no larger than necessary. Empty space in a freezer will still consume energy. It should be well insulated and sealed. Recommended insulation value is R-25 to R-30 which will translate into 4 to 6 inches of good quality foam ( or 1 to 2 inches if Vacuum Panels are used)

Freezer Star Rating

European Manufacturers use a 1 to 4 star system to grade freezers. This simple system is very useful in comparing freezer performance

**** ( Below 0°F) Will Freeze fresh food and keep up to 12 months.

*** ( 0°F) Will keep frozen products for up to 3 months.

** ( 10°F) Will store frozen food for 1 month.

* ( 22°F) Pre-frozen food can be kept for approx. 1 week.

It is an inescapable fact that it takes a dramatic increase in power to maintain a four star freezer. If one or two stars will suffice then there are big energy savings.

The standard refrigeration systems with "O" shaped and bin evaporators and the +12°F Holding plates will maintain small freezer sections of * (or ** in optimum designs). For higher *** or even **** use one of the recommended systems below.
